Tokens4Change

On Friday, February 2, 2018 Youth Without Shelter recognizes eight years of supporting youth one step at a time through Tokens4Change.  Can we count you in as a volunteer in 2018?

As you know on T4C Day students and volunteers from across Toronto are in TTC subway stations, PATH and office locations using the arts and creative canvassing to raise funds for YWS’s essential wrap around programs and transit fare to support homeless youth served by YWS.  One volunteer at a time you are changing young lives.

Why does it matter?

6,000 youth are homeless in Canada today. 28% of the Toronto homeless population are youth.  40.1% of these youth were younger than 16 when they first experienced homelessness. 63% of homeless youth have experienced childhood trauma and/or abuse.  Funds raised during Tokens4Change help overcome the diverse range of obstacles youth must overcome to break out of the cycle of homelessness.

Homeless youth require opportunities, security, protection, life skills and understanding.  They need support strategies that are distinct.

YWS’s approach is to meet each individual young person where they are at and empower them in moving forward in their life.  “I appreciate everything you’ve done for me while I stayed here, but it’s time for me to move on and try being on my own.  I don’t think it’s going to be hard because you’ve prepared me for my journey.” (Youth note on the Legacy Wall in Life Skills Program)

In 2016/17 Tokens4Change made possible at Youth Without Shelter:  17,653 nights of safe refuge; 5 graduations; 55 youth were employed; and 66 youth were permanently housed.  With Tokens4Change funds YWS is finding new ways to connect with young people and equip youth with the life skills to transition to successful independent living.

Save the date:  Friday, February 2, 2018:  Can you volunteer again this year as a Station Captain and/or Canvasser?  Tell us now your volunteer role choice (Station Captain and/or Canvasser) and shift preferences (7 am to 11 am; 11 am to 3 pm; 3 pm to 7 pm) to assist in planning.  Confirmation of T4C 2018 plans and your volunteer shift will follow in January.

Thank you for making change one youth at a time

Volunteering at Dans la Rue!

Join Trek for Teens Montreal volunteering at Dans le rue shelter.

We'll be assisting with hot-dog prep, which usually takes place from 5PM to 7PM at the Day Centre in 1662 Ontario Street East H2L 1S7 (just west corner Papineau).

The closest metro is Papineau (green line) and is about a 5 to 7 minute walk north on Papineau.  It is street parking only if coming by car.  Suggested parking areas are on side streets Champlain or Alexandre DeSève.

The task is pretty simple as we will be prepping hot dogs for service to youth on our Van.  We place the sausage into the bun and into a paper wrapper and then into storage bins.  Small actions make big impacts!

Please dress comfortably as it is a standing activity!

Please contact director.montreal@trekforteens.com for more information.

And another event

In 2007, a team of high school students from the Toronto area met at the Camp Enterprise program, run by the Rotary Club of Etobicoke. As part of the program, the students were asked to select a charity and create a plan for a fundraising event.

The Trek for Teens idea was chosen, and the team worked under the mentorship of the Rotary Club for the first year.

The Trek for Teens Foundation has been successful and independently run mainly by students ever since.

What events?

Throughout the year, the Trek for Teens Foundation organizes various events designed to draw on the unique talents and skills of individuals. One of the largest events is the Trek for Teens Race in Toronto. The Race takes place every May, challenging teams of youth ages 13 – 19 solve problems and find hidden clues while working together to complete the course (much like the “Amazing Race”). Other Trek for Teens opportunities include:

Community events
Conferences
Concerts
Dance events
Fashion Shows and fashion events
Film festivals
Outreach events
Make sure you check out our Events calendar to see what’s on the horizon!

Get Involved

We encourage all youth to become involved in the foundation. It’s a fun way to fulfill your community service obligations for school, or just to get involved in your community. All funds generated by the Trek for Teens Foundation go to homelessness initiatives and charities working to help kids get off the street and find stability in their lives.

Interested in the Race Day, either as a participant or a volunteer? Sign up here.
