On Friday, February 2, 2018 Youth Without Shelter recognizes eight years of supporting youth one step at a time through Tokens4Change. Can we count you in as a volunteer in 2018?
As you know on T4C Day students and volunteers from across Toronto are in TTC subway stations, PATH and office locations using the arts and creative canvassing to raise funds for YWS’s essential wrap around programs and transit fare to support homeless youth served by YWS. One volunteer at a time you are changing young lives.
Why does it matter?
6,000 youth are homeless in Canada today. 28% of the Toronto homeless population are youth. 40.1% of these youth were younger than 16 when they first experienced homelessness. 63% of homeless youth have experienced childhood trauma and/or abuse. Funds raised during Tokens4Change help overcome the diverse range of obstacles youth must overcome to break out of the cycle of homelessness.
Homeless youth require opportunities, security, protection, life skills and understanding. They need support strategies that are distinct.
YWS’s approach is to meet each individual young person where they are at and empower them in moving forward in their life. “I appreciate everything you’ve done for me while I stayed here, but it’s time for me to move on and try being on my own. I don’t think it’s going to be hard because you’ve prepared me for my journey.” (Youth note on the Legacy Wall in Life Skills Program)
In 2016/17 Tokens4Change made possible at Youth Without Shelter: 17,653 nights of safe refuge; 5 graduations; 55 youth were employed; and 66 youth were permanently housed. With Tokens4Change funds YWS is finding new ways to connect with young people and equip youth with the life skills to transition to successful independent living.
Save the date: Friday, February 2, 2018: Can you volunteer again this year as a Station Captain and/or Canvasser? Tell us now your volunteer role choice (Station Captain and/or Canvasser) and shift preferences (7 am to 11 am; 11 am to 3 pm; 3 pm to 7 pm) to assist in planning. Confirmation of T4C 2018 plans and your volunteer shift will follow in January.
Thank you for making change one youth at a time
